School Visits

Sudipta’s presentations blend storytelling and language arts with fun and wit.  Children of all ages are invited to enjoy Poppy’s story and to learn about writing.  Sudipta shares all her books with the students so they can see a real face behind the printed words.

Sudipta is happy to work with teachers to make classroom visits both supplementary and complementary to the in-school learning experience.

Here is a sampling of the presentations Sudipta offers:

How do you make a Mine-o-Saur? and Poppy on Stage. PreK-Grade 1 (these presentations can be done jointly or individually)

Meet the Mine-o-saur through a book reading and learn how an author creates new characters.  We’ll discuss the mine-o-saur’s in our own lives (discussing selfishness, sharing, and funny stories to go with that).  Then meet Tightrope Poppy and join in the storytelling experience by acting out the story – all the balancing and plopping!  This presentation also includes an overview of what Sudipta does as a writer and how the publishing process works.

From Inspiration to Printed Page: How a writer takes an idea and crafts it into a publication. All ages.

Sudipta talks about the writing process, from finding and refining an idea to the final published piece.  She will read excerpts from her current projects, discuss how she structures a book, and share funny stories about her career as a writer.  She reads one of her newer projects and asks the students to develop the art to accompany the text, either individually (to be completed independently) or by dividing the pages among the audience.  The session concludes with a preview of the illustrator’s completed art.

Writing Workshops. Grades 2-5

Sudipta guides the audience through the process of creating a story.  She discusses  with the group how strong characters, interesting settings, and challenging conflicts are the heart to good stories.  The group then begins a guided writing assignment to let each child’s creativity take center stage.

Science Fair Presentations

Ooey, Gooey, Gross. All ages.

Sudipta shares selections and activities from her upcoming series of books, The Mad Scientist’s Library.  The students will hear how a writer decides which topics will interest readers and how to present difficult information in a fun and exciting way.  Sudipta talks about how everything has a story, even things you learn in school.  The session concludes with a guided writing activity to tell the story of earthworms.

The Scientific Method In Action.

Sudipta explains the scientific method and how scientists use it in their research.  A hands-on activity follows.  Grades 6-8 will explore The Science of Spit to learn about digestive proteins and color chemistry; grades 3-5 will build The 60 Cent Battery to explore electric currents and chemical reactions; grades K-2 will build a Liquid Rainbow to learn about density and buoyancy.
