January 2010 Sudipta, Thank you for coming to Birches Elementary School. Your energetic, enthusiastic and humorous presentation was enjoyed by all. You had the ability to keep all students’ attention, because you spoke on their level. Using the game show presentation format was very clever and informative. There is still a buzz in our school about your visit, and your books don’t stay on the library shelves. A great time was had by all. Thanks again for coming. Sincerely, Ale Maciunas Birches’ School Media Specialist

Sudipta’s presentations blend storytelling and language arts with fun and wit. Children of all ages are invited to learn about writing, the process of making a book, and the challenges of being a writer. Sudipta shares all her books with the students so they can see a real face behind the printed words.
Sudipta is happy to work with teachers to make classroom visits both supplementary and complementary to the in-school learning experience. Below you will find a sampling of her presentations but there are many more available.
Why Invite Sudipta?
Author Day Activities
The Logistics
Book Ordering Information
Sudipta is very sensitive to the fact that not all parents will opt to purchase books during the author visit, and that can be hard for a kid. So no one ever leaves her presentations empty handed - she provides a number of giveaways to the children, from bookmarks to magnets to postcards to stickers, so that everyone has a special souvenir to take home.

Sudipta’s Presentations
Here is a sampling of the presentations Sudipta offers: Smooch, Roar, Plop, and More. PreK-Grade 3. This presentation centers on the main characters of Sudipta’s picture books, The Hog Prince, The Mine-o-saur, and Tightrope Poppy. Sudipta reads the books and the children are encouraged to join in the storytelling experience by acting out the stories – all the smooching, roaring, and plopping! The presentation includes an overview of what Sudipta does as a writer and how the publishing process works. From Inspiration to Printed Page: How a writer takes an idea and crafts it into a publication. All ages. Sudipta talks about the writing process, from finding and refining an idea to the final published piece. She will read excerpts from her current projects, discuss how she structures a book, and share funny stories about her career as a writer. She reads one of her newer projects and asks the students to develop the art to accompany the text, either individually (to be completed independently) or by dividing the pages among the audience. The session concludes with a preview of the illustrator’s completed art.
Writing Workshops. Grades 2-5 Sudipta guides the audience through the process of creating a story. She discusses how strong characters, interesting settings, and challenging conflicts are the heart to good stories. The group then begins a guided writing assignment to let each child’s creativity take center stage.
