A Picture Book Writer's Ten Commandments
|
|
|
1. Thou shalt not exceed 700 words
2. Thou shalt write a story with a beginning, middle, and end
3. Thou shalt remember that young does not mean slight
4. Thou shalt look for fresh and new ideas, approaches, plots, and characters
5. Thou shalt not confuse fresh and new with cannibalistic demon bunnies having a tea party
6. Thou shalt page out your manuscript while editing
7. Thou shalt not insist that your manuscript would make a perfect 48-page picture book
8. Thou shalt have a clear idea of what the pictures in your story will look like
9. Thou shalt not suggest illustrators like “the guy who did Olivia” in your cover letter
10. Thou shalt remember that rules are meant to be broken. But probably not these rules.
