A Little Bit About Me

Every book is an autobiography. If you want to know about my life, all you have to do is read my books. Kids always react to that revelation by wondering if that makes me a vampire pig (à la Hampire!) or a chicken in pajamas (à la Chicks Run Wild) – and, of course, it doesn’t. But there is a piece of me in each of my books.

 

It is not possible for a writer to write anything authentic that she does not know intimately. Therefore, as authors, what we write inevitably reflects what we have lived. My books are about flawed characters, families who drive each other crazy, plans that don't always work out, and the adjustments we all make while we go through life. That's because I'm a  flawed person who loves a lot of flawed people who often drive me crazy. My plans rarely work out the way they are supposed to and I've learned that making changes on the fly is one of life's greatest pleasures. I create characters based on people I know, and when I write stories for those characters, I get to give them the endings that they deserve.
